Original version

Problems, questions

The first performance of the final version of the Quartet is said to have been given by the Budapest Quartet in Washington DC in January 1943. We have not traced a performance there and then by that group, nor for any month and year in Washington for which that might be a mistake. The Washington Post of May 23 and 25, 1943 announced a performance by the Budapest Quartet that included the Barber Quartet in Washington on May 28.

Noted (in Additional references) as the “Wisconsin premiere” as opposed to the “national premiere” in Washington DC five days later. That suggests that the Wisconsin was the world premiere.

Milhaud, Darius Quartet No. 6 H 1923-03-13 Brussels, Belgium P
Problems, questions

The information in Collaer 1988 (“February 1923”), probably taken from the earlier Milhaud catalogue of Georges Beck, is incorrect. (See Additional references, below.)

Additional references

A small notebook of Germain Prévost in the Mills Music Library, University of Wisconsin at Madison, indicates the date of the first performance, with a charming note from Milhaud, also dated March 13, 1923, on the next two pages. (In his notebook, Prévost also mentions concerts that took place in February 1923. See Problems, questions, above.)
